FIRST EDITION, 12 volumes in all (9 text volumes; 1 atlas volume; 2 volumes of maps in one slipcase; one illustrated leaflet on the work), 4to (280 x 214mm), over 413 plates in total, c. 351 maps, modern black half morocco over maroon cloth, spines with raised bands in 6 compartments, two with gilt lettering; speckled foredges, occasional light marks to boards.
A VERY FINE FIRST EDITION SET of Hedin's fourth work, detailing the findings of his expedition to Southern Tibet between 1905 and 1908. At the time of publication, this work provided the most comprehensive investigation of Tibet thus far, including a description of the Transhimalayas: a mountain range named by Hedin himself.
