Diana

signed twice: Pugi

white marble, with a gilt bronze bow

62cm., 24⅜in.

Guglielmo Pugi is known for his genre sculpture in marble and alabaster. He founded his workshop in Florence from which he cultivated an international client base. This workshop later expanded to include his sons, Gino and Fiorenzo.

This striking marble depicts the huntress Diana, daughter of Jupiter and twin to Apollo, holding her bow rendered in brilliant gilt bronze. In Roman mythology, Diana was venerated as the virgin goddess of the hunt and the moon, a figure whose narratives emphasise chastity, independence, and particularly her protective role over childbirth and women.
