The present work was likely executed in 1837 on a trip to the Rocky Mountain West that Miller took with his friend, Sir William Drummond Stewart, a Scottish soldier and sportsman. This was one of several watercolors that Miller produced depicting the stunning landscapes he witnessed during his pivotal trip—the only time in his life he ever went West.
