A Plain and Familiar Introduction to the Newtonian Philosophy. London: For W. Owen, 1751; [Bound with:] A Panegyrick on the Newtonian Philosophy shewing the Nature and Dignity of Science. London: For W. Owen, J. Leake, and J. Frederick, 1749 [but 1769]
First and second edition, respectively, of these works by the "well-known lecturer and ... early popularizer of Newtonian doctrines" (Babson).
Aside from his scientific lectures, Martin is perhaps best known for his compilation of the Lingua Britannica Reformata (1749), one of the early English dictionaries.
Two works in one volume, 8vo (197 x 124 mm). Title of first work printed in red and black, woodcut head-, tailpieces, and initials, 6 folding copperplate engravings; scattered foxing and toning, instances of marginal worming, a few short closed tears and punctures, one tear affecting one plate, a few leaves with marginal annotations. Contemporary calf, spine in six compartments, second gilt-lettered with black morocco label; rebacked, upper board entirely detached, worn.
