This photograph was acquired at The Indomitable Spirit, a landmark charitable auction and traveling exhibition organized by Photographers + Friends United Against AIDS at the height of the AIDS crisis. The auction brought together 94 donated works by many of the most influential photographers and artists of the era, with proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) and the National Community AIDS Partnership. The project served as a powerful demonstration of the photography community's collective response to the epidemic, uniting established masters, emerging talents, and contemporary artists in support of AIDS research, education, and patient care. In addition to Nan Goldin, participating artists included David Wojnarowicz, Irving Penn, Annie Leibovitz, Sally Mann, Joel Meyerowitz, Cindy Sherman, Herb Ritts, Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, and Andres Serrano, among many others.

"Goldin photographs obsessively, taking pictures of her friends, lovers, and family. Her work is a diary, an emotional document of people who have wandered in and out of her life.
