Follower of Jan Brueghel the Elder

A concert of birds, or An Allegory of Sound

bears monogram lower right: JS (or RS)

oil on copper

unframed: 14.8 x 20 cm.; 5⅞ x 7⅞ in.

framed: 23.4 x 29 cm.; 9¼ x 11⅜ in.

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 28 November 1975, lot 97 (as Jan van Kessel).

This composition probably derives from a lost prototype by Jan Brueghel the Elder, and the numerous copies and variations known attest to its popularity. While some versions are attributed to Jan van Kessel and Ferdinand van Kessel, the present iteration comes closest to those known by Jan Brueghel the Younger.1
