The Harbour, Naples

oil on canvas

unframed: 40.5 x 61 cm.; 16 x 24 in.

framed: 53 x 71.5 cm.; 20⅞ x 28⅛ in.

On the right of this vivid and lively view of Naples harbour can be seen the bow of the Ferdinando I, the first ever Italian steamship, launched in Naples in 1818 and named after King Ferdinando of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The painting may well have been painted for a Grand Tourist as a souvenir of landing in Naples aboard the vessel. On the left, the baroque Dogana Immacolatella gleams in the morning sunlight.
