Painted around 1817, when the artist was fifteen years old, this picture is one of a number which depict the bull-terrier, Brutus, which belonged to W.W. Simpson, the artist's friend and patron. We are grateful to Mr Richard Ormond for endorsing the attribution to Landseer.
