A.M. Reynolds, The Life and Work of Frank Holl, 1912, p.186, reproduced

‘It represents the interior of a cottage – the old Welsh cottage near Criccieth – half in light which straggles through the little, deep-set window, half in deep shadow. Against the window is silhouetted the tall figure of a woman whose face seen in profile gazes sternly and anxiously out. Through the panes one can see groups of soldiers outlined against the sky. Clinging to her skirts is a child, in obvious terror of what is going on outside. The whole is, as usual, very low in tone, all the light being concentrated on the face of the woman.’ (A.M. Reynolds, The Life and Work of Frank Holl, 1912, p.186)
