Julia Feininger, Berlin and New York
Dr. Fritz Hesse, Berlin (gift from the above)
Thence by descent to the present owner
The work was a birthday gift by the artist’s wife, Julia Feininger (1880–1970), to Dr. Fritz Hesse (1881–1973). A lawyer, politician, and civic leader, Hesse served as Mayor of Dessau, Saxony-Anhalt, from 1918 onward. He played a pivotal role in securing Dessau as the new home of the Bauhaus in 1925, following the institution’s forced closure in Weimar. Dismissed from office by the National Socialists in 1933, Hesse relocated to Berlin, where he resumed his legal career. In the aftermath of the Second World War, he returned to again as Mayor of Dessau from 1945 to 1946. In 1950, he settled in West Berlin before moving to Munich.
