During the late 1920s and occasionally thereafter Duncan Grant painted in Toulon and Marseilles along the French coast west of Cassis where he and Vanessa Bell had a house. He appreciated these short journeys as breaks from the sometimes crowded life at Cassis.
This painting shows an unusually quiet view of the entrance to the harbour of Marseilles’s Vieux Port, showing the Fort St Jean to the right.
