Description

Southern German or French, probably 16th century

Greyhound

bronze

17cm., 6¾in.

At least two other casts of the present model are known, one in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. Pl. 9992), tentatively catalogued by Leithe-Jasper (op. cit.) as 'French, second half of the 16th century', and another formerly in the collection of M. Leroy in Paris, which has been formerly considered as Italian and Southern German (Bode and Draper, op. cit.). While the Vienna cast shows significant afterworking, the present bronze is comparatively crude and was perhaps left unfinished.
