In 590 A.D., Rome suffered a plague. Pope Gregory pleaded for the assistance of the archangel Saint Michael to help fight the epidemic as he celebrated the mass and processed through Rome with prayers and incense. Later, Saint Michael, appeared on top of the Castel Sant' Angelo, the fortress near Vatican City, to rid the citizens of the disease.
