Accepted into the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1679, Cornelis Dusart achieved professional recognition within the Haarlem tradition. This work exemplifies Dusart’s treatment of peasant life, a genre for which he was particularly noted, depicting a family gathered outside a cottage. The relaxed configuration and expressions of the figures, coupled with their coexistence with the farm animals, evokes the warm, familiar disorder of everyday rural life.
