The then small village of Briare lies on the banks of the river Loire in central France. Harpignies, who travelled extensively around the country of his birth, painted at Briare on a number of occasions. An oil on canvas entitled Moonrise on the Loire at Briare (1866), for example, is held in the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia.1
