Inspired by motifs drawn from eighteenth-century Milanese majolica, the "Ermione" design was among the decorative schemes that Gio Ponti revisited across a range of ceramic forms in both monochrome and polychrome variants. The distinctive pairing of the present vase's form with an all-over application of the "Ermione" motif is atypical within the known production and suggests that the work may have been executed as a proof or experimental piece.
