The School of Fencing, with a general explanation of the principal attitudes and positions peculiar to the art. London: [for author], 1787
Oblong 8vo (120 x 223 mm). 47 engraved plates, with paired plate numbers 2-3, 11-12, and 13-14, imprint at foot of plates dated August 1783, index at end; scattered faint foxing, offsetting, a few leaves trimmed close. Half calf and marbled paper-covered boards, spine with raised bands in five compartments, the second compartment with gilt black morocco lettering piece, others with a repeated gilt decoration, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; light rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, some wear and restoration to spine.
An English edition of an important work on fencing, edited by the son of the author.
Domenico Angelo was a famed fencer in the 18th century. Although Italian by birth, he ended up founding a fencing school in London, which became notable for its acceptance of women and instruction of the royal family, including individuals such as King George III. He is recognized as one of the key figures in the formation of the formal sport of fencing.
