Commissioned by the MacDougals, a collectors couple and friends of Édouard Marcel Sandoz, this sculpture immortalises their Scottish Terrier, Lady MacDougal, in a life-size portrait. Exhibited at the 1932 Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the present model is remarkable for its striking realism. The finely rendered, bristling coat and the dog's particularly expressive gaze endow the animal with an exceptionally vivid presence.

Sandoz returned to the model of Lady MacDougal in 1942 for his sundial project, in which two life-size Scottish Terriers flank a female figure. This reuse attests to the significance of the work within the artist's animal repertoire.
