Stair & Co., New York, 6 November 1985, no. P470

A closely related pair, formerly in the Mottahedeh collection, is illustrated in David Howard and John Ayers, China For the West, 1978, Vol. II, pp 614-165, cat no. 645, and sold in these rooms on January 30, 1985, lot 349. The authors note the crucifix in the center of chest that these were made for a Christian audience, but blended with the iconography of Guanyin. Another pair sold in our Monaco rooms, February 12, 1979, lot 565.
