A pair of fahua 'lotus' jars, Ming dynasty, 17th century

The present pair of jars occupies an important position in the evolution of the fahua tradition, bridging the celebrated wares of the Ming dynasty and the sophisticated imperial famillerose fahua-imitation jars produced during the Qianlong period (r. 1736–1795). Their bold raised outlines, vibrant palette, and elaborate lotus-pond decoration retain the distinctive characteristics of earlier Ming fahua, while their refined elegance and sumptuous appearance anticipate the Qianlong court’s imperial reinterpretation of the fahua style. They thus represent a pivotal stage in the development of fahua, connecting the Ming tradition with its later imperial emulation.
