John Sparks Ltd., London, circa 1970.
Collection of Richard Marchant.
The present scene, gloriously rendered in famille verte enamels, derives from Chapter 84 of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and depicts the general Lu Xun (183–245) caught in the infamous Maze of Eight Formations set by master strategist Zhuge Liang (181-234). Faced with almost certain defeat, Lu stumbles upon Zhuge's father-in-law, the elderly Huang Chengyan, who is moved by virtue to rescue Xun and his men, disobeying his son-in-law and guiding the troops through the labyrinth.
