Description

modelled with a bearded, winged figure, allegorical of Time, seated, his head resting on a marble plinth, the circular watch holder entwined with a serpent and laurel wreath and supported on a simulated hardstone column, on a rectangular base

25 cm, 9 ⅞ in. high

Wannenes, Genoa, 26 September 2014, lot 1028.

This rare watch holder, appropriately featuring Father Time with his attributes, appears to be unrecorded in the literature, but on the basis of the material and figural modelling, can be attributed to the Cozzi factory. A 1783 inventory of finished or semi-finished stock, held at the Canal Regio premises and at the San Salvador workshop, gives an overview of factory production in the late 18th century and includes among the ‘Gruppi dipinti’ a ‘Porta Orologio’ or watch holder; see F. Stazzi, Le porcellane veneziane di Geminiano e Vincenzo Cozzi, Venice, 1981, p. 168.
