Description
with an enameled coat of arms set into the base and engraved with 'Gothic' lettering (perhaps later)
silver and enamel
height: 6 ½ in.; 16.5 cm
The present chalice, distinguished by its sharply defined hexagonal knop and stellate base, exemplifies a style favored in Northern Europe, particularly the Rhineland and the Low Countries, in the 15th century. The coat of arms decorating the knop and repeated on the base most likely identified the patron who commissioned the piece. A similar object, featuring a hexagonal knop along with a similar base, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession number: 1989.358) and is given to the Southern Netherlands during the second quarter of the 15th century.
