rectangular with cut corners, the lid centered with a later octagonal enamel plaque painted en grisaille with a mythological subject and putti, in a chased gold frame, on a translucent dark blue enamel ground over bands of arch-shaped engine-turning, within slender opaque white enamel frames and further chased leaf tip borders on a sablé ground, the sides and base decorated en suite, the angles flanked with chased Corinthian columns, maker's mark, charge and discharge marks of Jean Baptiste Fouache (1774-1780), Paris date letter L for 1774, the left rim numbered: 228, post-1918 French eagle's head control mark for 18 ct gold,
