A rare landscape by Alexandre-François Caminade, Landscape with a Shepherd Walking before the Falls at Tivoli represents the essence of Neoclassical landscape painting. Painted en plein air, the present work depicts a famous Roman site with controlled brushwork and a subdued palette. A student of Neoclassical master Jacques-Louis David, Caminade won a gold medal at the Académie in 1809 and was a regular exhibitor at the Salon from 1812 through 1859.

The present work remained in the collection of Caminade's family until 2002, when the artist's descendants sold a group of his paintings at auction. Landscape with a Shepherd Walking before the Falls at Tivoli hammered at 33,000 EUR, the second-highest price of the group and nearly double the artist's previous record price.
