From 1862-1870, Pavel Chistyakov left Russia to work and travel in Italy, Germany, and France; Frenchman Preparing for the bal populaire is likely  the only work Chistyakov created during his Paris period of 1863. Upon returning to Russia in 1870, Chistyakov exhibited the present work, as well as another titled Roman Beggar, at the Imperial Academy show where he earned the title of Academic. In addition to his painterly output, Chistyakov played a significant role in shaping the history of Russian art as a teacher. As an instructor at the Academy of Arts, his students included Mikhael Vrubel, Valentin Serov, and Ilya Repin.
