Description

rectangular, inlaid en grisaille (in monochrome) in imitation of cameo with the profile bust of the poetess Sappho, on a deep blue ground, in a later rectangular gilded wood frame 


Haut. 28 cm, larg. 23,5 cm; Height 11 in, width 9 7/8 in  

Said to have come from the collection of Ferdinand II, King of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (1810-1859) at Palazzo Rotunda (sic), Naples; 

Purchased in Naples whilst on his honeymoon by George Rennie, brother of John Rennie, designer of London Bridge and the Serpentine Bridge, circa 1860; 

By descent to his great great grandson who sold the present at Sotheby’s, London, Important Silver, Gold Boxes and Fabergé, 9 November 2000, lot 10.
