inscribed on the relined canvas, transcribed from the original: ‘Joli Fe.t 1762 / S: Pce Francauilla a Napoli / Fac-simile a quello che trovasi dietro la tela antica’; with two collection marks of the Infante Don Sebastián Gabriel de Borbón: S.G. surmounted by a crown

Probably commissioned by Don Michele Imperiali, Prince of Francavilla (1719–1782), resident at the Palazzo Giudice di Cellamare, Naples from 1760–1782 (where his collection was valued at 30,000 ducats);
Infante Don Sebastián Gabriel de Borbón (1811–1875), by whom bequeathed to his son
Don Luís de Borbón, Duque de Ansola, by whom bequeathed to his son
Don Manfredo de Borbón y Bernaldo de Quiros, Duque de Hernani (1893–1979);
Thence by descent in the Valdès Collection, Madrid;
