in original fitted covered case imitating fishskin with douté border, contained in a hinged silver fitted case engraved on the cover: 'Within this box / is King James ye eight his picture / which he sat to in St Germaines, / in France, in May: 1703, & gave it / out of his owne hand, to Simon Lord / Frasier of Lovat, chief of ye famous / & innuberous Kindred, & Clann of the / Frasers in Scotland, as a particular / mark of his love & favour to ye said Ld, / for his Ancestors Loyalty, & for his / owne great services to his Father King / James ye seventh, while in banish= / ment, & his extrordinary service / & hasards he run in helping / to restore his Majesty'; and on the base: J A Arlaud / pinxit ad - vivum. / Anno - 1703 - mense maio /'; inscrit à l'encre au verso: 'King James / The Eight sat to / this picture in Saint / Germain in France / and gave it out of his own / hand to Simon Lord Lovat / as a mark of his favour for / his services done him & to his / Father K: James the Seventh / while in Exile in France'
