From the early 1880s, Gemito visted the museums of Naples to study the precious collections of antiques. As a result, his work was constantly inspired by Greco-Roman statuary, indirectly for some of his models, or more directly, as in this Narcissus, which echoes the elegant pose of the bronze statuette discovered in Pompeii in 1862, only twenty years earlier, and now in the Museo Nazionale Archaeologico in Naples.
