Adriano Ribolzi Antiquaire, Monte-Carlo;

Where acquired, 25 March 2008.

Emperor from 138 to 161 AD, Antoninus Pius (89-161 AD) succeeded his adoptive father, Hadrian. Preferring diplomacy to conquest, he worked to strengthen justice and citizens' rights, particularly those of slaves. His reign was marked by stability in his empire, the development of infrastructure such as roads and aqueducts, and a good administration overall. His loyalty to Hadrian and to the Roman gods earned him the nickname Antoninus Pius.

Upon his death, Marcus Aurelius, his adopted son, succeeded him and shared the power with his stepbrother, Lucius Verus.
