António de Sommer Champalimaud was a Portuguese banker and industrialist, The wealthiest man in Portugal and a noted philanthropist, he spent a lifetime acquiring paintings, furniture and sculptures. In 1974, after the Carnation Revolution, he left for Brazil, where he lived in exile for seven years. Upon his return to Portugal, he rebuilt his empire, which had been nationalised, in the insurance, banking, iron ore mining and cement sectors.
