Possibly by descent in the artist's family to 'Miss Ward' (according to a label on the reverse);

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby’s, 26 November 1975, lot 94.

This painting is a version of one of the artist's most celebrated compositions. The first recorded version is dated 1807, and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1808.1 A slightly larger version, signed and dated 1829 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1830, sold in London on 11 June 1999, lot 75, for £43,000.2
