by Thomas Malton in 1793 for his: A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster (vol. 1)
This large-scale watercolour demonstrates why Thomas Malton was considered among the leading architectural draughtsman of his day. Dating to the first years of the 1790s, Malton produced an engraving of this splendid subject in 1793, which he included in his serialized publication A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster.
Malton was the son of an artist and he first exhibited in London in 1768. He lived for a time at Bath and in Dublin but by 1789 he had returned to London. Between 1789 and 1791 he gave lessons in perspective to the young J.M.W. Turner, who later described him as ‘my real master’.1
