London, Robiliant + Voena & Stair Sainty, Napoléon. Antiquity to Empire, 18 June-30 July 2015.

The Lavys were a family of engravers and medallists active in Turin at the end of the 18th Century. The sons Carlo, Giovanni, Filippo and Amedeo were each employed at the Royal Mint, where their father Lorenzo Lavy (1720-1789) had worked since 1750.

Amedeo went on to study in Turin, and eventually in Rome between 1805 and 1806. The present bust is a charming representation of the sculptor’s mentor Antonio Canova who he studied under while in Rome. This example follows the model in marble by Gaetano Monti at the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts.
