Napoléon Ist (1769-1821)

Probably given by the Emperor to Angelo Vignali (1784-1835), the Emperor's chaplain on the island of Saint Helena;

By descent in the family;

Champetier de Ribes, Ribeyre et Millon, Abbé Vignali collection, Paris, 26 October 1977, lot 55 (presented as a bandana handkerchief);

Sotheby's London, Estate of the Late Mr Allan F Lazarus, 15 May 1996, lot 261;

Appraised by Jean-Pierre Duchiron (1953-2011), arms and historical memorabilia expert who certified this madras in an inventory for the owner before 2002.
