Phyllis Bramson is a widely recognized and eclectic painter whose paintings meander between love, desire, and tragedy, from the casual encounter to highly formalized exchanges of lovemaking and everything in between. Blending multiple influences, including mystical figures, spirituality, kitsch culture, and beyond, Bramson invites viewers into a fantastical landscape. Influenced by Chicago Imagism and surrealism, her vivid compositions investigate love, affection, and women’s empowerment. Bramson is the recipient of numerous awards including a Guggenheim Grant, a Tiffany Foundation Award, an Anonymous Was A Woman Award, a senior National Endowment Grant, and a Rockefeller Award. Bramson’s works have been exhibited at the MCA, as well as the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Chicago Cultural Center; Boulder Art Museum; Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago; and the Museum of West Virginia. Group exhibitions include presentations at the Seattle Art Museum; Art Institute of Chicago; Renwick Museum, Washington, D.C.; and the Corcoran Museum's 43rd Biennial. Bramson has several paintings in the MCA Collection.
