Saint Michael slaying the Devil

polychromed wood

124cm. high; 48⅞in.

Private collection, Lyon.

This depiction of Saint Michael, with richly polychromed wings and clad in intricately detailed armor, derives from the iconography of the Last Judgment as developed in Flemish models from the final quarter of the 15th century. A notable example can be found in the central panel of the Last Judgment triptych by Hans Memling, painted in Bruges for the Florentine banker Angelo Tani, between 1467 and 1471 (Muzeum Narodowe, Gdańsk, inv. MNG/SD/413/M). The Burgundian territories, soon to fall under Spanish rule, displayed a particular predilection for this subject.
