Italian, Venice, early 16th century
Two footed bowls
glass, enamels and gilding, decorated with scale ornament, one moulded with spiralling ribs, the other with radiating ribs to the underside
diameter 31 cm. and 30.3 cm., 12 1/4 in. and 12 in.
Examples with very closely related ornament to that on the bowls in the present lot are in the Louvre, Paris (inv. nos. R9 and R 15). Another example of the same form and decoration was sold at Sotheby's London, 8 November 2023, lot 163. Both the Louvre and the Sotheby's examples are of slightly smaller size than the present examples. Two footed bowls with straight moulded ribs and similar decoration are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (object nos. 1975.1.1197 and 1975.1.1184), illustrated by D. P. Lanmon and D. B. Whitehouse, Glass in the Robert Lehman Collection, Princeton, 1993, vol. XI, pp. 42-45, nos. 12 and 13.
