Alberto Giacometti's Calebasse lamp is one of the most significant creations of his collaboration with Jean-Michel Frank in the 1930s. The name of the model refers directly to the organic shape of the calabash, a fruit of the cucurbitaceae family, often used as a container or domestic object since Antiquity. This plant-like evocation is reflected here in a generous silhouette, full of roundness and balance.
Existing in several versions (alabaster, wood, plaster), our glazed terracotta piece combines pure lines with a subtle presence, giving it a sculptural quality.
From the collection of the painter Jean Barluet, a close friend of the Giacometti brothers, this lamp was given to him as a gesture of friendship by Alberto Giacometti.
This lot is sold with a certificate of authenticity from the Comité Giacometti and is recorded in the database of the Fondation Giacometti, the Alberto Giacometti Database, under the number AGD 4693.
