Description

Steubenrauch, Phillip von, Johann Schindler, and Johann Höchle. [Darstellung der k.k. osterr. Armee nach der neusten Adjustirung]. Vienna: Artaria, n.d. [but 1821]

Suite of 16 very finely handcolored plates (12 engraved and 4 lithographed) after Steubenrauch, Schindler, and Höchle by Mansfield, Erhard, Klein, Beyer and others, the plates trimmed to edge of images (which vary slightly in size from a maximum of about 335 x 468 mm) and mounted on larger sheets (448 x 585 mm) within black rules and wash borders of various shades of gray and green, most pates accompanied by loose title-slips trimmed from the margins; lacking title-page. Early twentieth-century half russet morocco over marbled boards, spine in six compartments, the second gilt-lettered, the others paneled with double gilt rules, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt; corners restored, front inner hinge slightly split at top.

A specially prepared deluxe copy of this survey of imperial Austrian regiments, many mounted, including cuirassiers, uhlans, life guards, and dragoons, as well as pontonniers, sappers, grenadiers, jägers, artillery, and marines. Rare Book Hub records only one complete set of these plates (also lacking the title-page), but not mounted as here.
