Description
Locke, John
Two Treatises of Government: In the former, The false Principles and Foundation of Sir Robert Filmer, and his Followers, are Detected and Overthrown. The latter is an Essay concerning the True Original, Extent, and End of Civil Government. London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill at the Black Swan in Pater-noster-Row, 1694
Two parts in one, 8vo (165 x 100 mm). Title within double rule, final leaf with Churchill’s advertisement, early manuscript title to first blank; lacks pp. 337–352, these supplied in facsimile and loosely inserted in a pocket at end. Contemporary calf, paneled in blind, raised bands; rubbed and worn with loss at corners and edges, rebacked.
Rare second edition, corrected, of Locke’s landmark justification of revolution and limited government. Written in the wake of the Glorious Revolution, Two Treatises rejects the divine right of kings and lays out a framework for civil society grounded in liberty, property, and the social contract—principles that became central to Enlightenment political thought.
