incised on one side with a sixteen-character dedicatory inscription reading Jiaqing dingmao qiu bayue zhi ji Nanhai Mai Baichang jingchou ('Respectfully presented as a votive offering by Mai Baichang from Nanhai on the auspicious [day] in the eighth month of the dingmao year of Jiaqing’s reign [corresponding to 1807]'), wood stand (2)

Hausmann writes in his notes how the glaze gives the censer “an almost stone-like appearance. This is an impression which is enhanced by the solid, yet elegant potting and the animal masks - a subtle reference to archaic bronze
vessels”.
