Description

Hector Berlioz

Three autograph letters signed ("H. Berlioz"), APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED

1) to the publisher Maurice Schlesinger, ABOUT HIS MISTRESS AND LATER SECOND WIFE MARIE WILLÈS, enclosing for his consideration a review article on a concert given by her [not included here], asking that he put it in the body of the journal and not in small print, emphasising his request that he publish his review and instructing him to keep his name secret as he does not want anyone to suspect that he is the author ("Gardez moi le secret, je ne veux pas absolument qu'on m'en soupçonne l'auteur..."), 1 page, 8vo, integral autograph address panel, 13 February [1841], some creasing and light dust-staining

2) to the journalist and publisher Léon Escudier, asking whether he can put this evening's programme in his journal, and enclosing the same [not included here], requesting that he tell the bearer of this message, M. Rocquemont, if the orchestral parts of the 'l'air des Lombardi' has been published, noting if they haven't that he will ask Mme Ugalde to perform it with piano accompaniment ("Veuillez dire à M. Rocquemont qui vous remettra ce mot si les parties d'orchestre de l'air des Lombardi sont gravées..."), observing that they are trying to avoid the ruinous costs of copying, 2 pages, 8vo, 'Saturday evening' [November 1850], integral blank, spotting and creasing

3) to Ferdinand Friedland, saying that he came but did not find him at home, asking him to be there at five o'clock or to arrange a meeting that evening, or else he will be very inconvenienced, 1 page, c.21 x 14cm, cut down from a larger leaf, no place or date [16 June 1846], some staining and creasing

Three exceptionally interesting and apparently unpublished letters, of which the first provides revealing information relating to the beginning of Berlioz's affair with Marie Recio, formerly Mlle Villès.
