Himalayas--Charles Wyndham.

Original watercolour drawings of the Himalayas. 1852

 

A portfolio (sheet sizes ranging from 130 x 175mm. to 340 x 500mm.) and a 4to sketchbook (370 x 270mm.), the portfolio with 42 original watercolour (one or two pencil) drawings of Himalayan scenery and people, generally on wove paper watermarked “J Whatman Turkey Mill 1851”, generally captioned and dated by Wyndham in ink on the verso, the quarto album with a further 16 watercolour (a few pencil) drawings made in India and including the Himalayas, together with a large number of watercolour or pen-and-ink sketches of domestic scenes and people, the portfolio contemporary cloth, the album contemporary roan, the drawings with some spotting and wear commensurate with age and travel, the portfolio and album binding somewhat worn

 

A wonderful collection of on-the-spot drawings of the Himalayas and its people. Charles Wyndham (1827–1908) joined gained the Bengal Light Cavalry in 1843 with the rank of Cornet, and was known for his talent as an artist. The drawings in the portfolio are detailed depictions of Himalayan people and scenery, executed with considerable talent.

 

The album, although it includes a number of drawings executed in India, is more domestic in nature, showing family members and family seats. Wyndham was the illegitimate son of Colonel Charles Wyndham (1796–1866) who was himself the illegitimate son of George O’Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont.
