Description

SENECA, LUCIUS ANNAEUS. L. Annei Senecae Cordubensis Tragoediae. Lyon: Sébastien Gryphe, 1554


This is a later printing of Gryphe's pocket edition of Seneca's Tragedies in a contemporary French binding.


16mo (118 x 74 mm). Roman and italic type, 29 lines plus headline. Collation: a-z8 2a-d8: 216 leaves. Woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut initials, ruled in red, some lines and passages marked in pencil. (Slight browning, ink stain on y8r.)


Binding: Contemporary French polished brown calf (124 x 82 mm), gilt fillet around sides, gilt arabesque at centre of each cover, spine with 4 bands and 2 false bands, gilt fleurons in each compartment. (Binding somewhat rubbed, foot of spine and corners defective, joints cracking.)
