A theological work by Domingo del Picó, preacher to Charles V, in A HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY PARISIAN CALF BINDING. This volume was at one time in the collection of Charles Schefer (1820-1898), a noted French diplomat, scholar, and collector, best known for his collection of Islamic manuscripts.
Folio (302 x 205 mm). Text in two columns, roman type, 49 lines plus headline. Collation: A2-8 B10 a-k8 l1 l3-8 m-q8 r6: 150 leaves (only, of 152; lacking title-page and l2). Woodcut initials, large woodcut device to recto of final leaf. (Lacking title-page and l2, A2 torn and repaired with substantial portion of text lost, browning.)
Binding: Contemporary Parisian tan calf over pasteboards (310 x 210 mm), richly gilt, series of concentric rectangular frames, fleuron at outer angles, frame of repeated leafy tool within 2 open frames formed by double fillets, in centre interlaced strapwork and rectangle filled with and surrounded by a variety of open leaf tools and tendrils as well as solid tools, spine with 5 full and 2 half bands, rosette in compartments, edges gilt and gauffered to a diaper pattern with small circles in interstices.
