This papal binding made for Julius III can be attributed to Marcantonio Guillery (see lot 112 in the present sale for a volume from the private library of Julius III).
4to (220 x 154mm). Roman type, 40 lines plus headline. Collation: *4 **4 A–Z4 AA–ZZ4 AAA–FFF4 a–c4 d6: 234 leaves. Woodcut printer’s device on title. (Some light spotting and browning.)
Binding: Contemporary Roman brown morocco armorial binding, gilt fillet around sides, large open frame formed by 2 sets of double gilt fillets, mitred at corners, gilt "monticelli" at outer corners, gilt wreath at inside corners, in centre gilt arms of Julius III on upper cover and IVLIO/III/PONT./ MAX. on lower, spine with 3 bands, title in gold running down spine, traces of 4 pairs of ties, edges gilt. (Spine ends, upper joint, and corners worn.)
Provenance: Pope Julius III (Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte, 1487-1555; r. 1550-1555), arms on binding, lower cover lettered with his name — inkstamp (tree standing on 3 monticelli, possibly Del Monte family) — armorial inkstamp “Antonius Portius I.V.D.” on title, possibly Antonio Porcio, of Forli — Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929), bookplate, note in pencil "Naples 1891" (Brian Hillyard, "Rosebery as book collector" in Journal of the Edinburgh Bibliographical Society, 7 (2012), pp.71-114, especially p.85 on his library in the Villa Rosebery in Posillipo, bought in 1897 and given to the British Government in 1909; p.108 note 49 for a volume inscribed "Naples Feb. 1891" — Rosebery, family library (Dalmeny), inkstamp "Barnbougle Castle" — sale, Sotheby's, The Continental library of Archibald, 5th Earl of Rosebery and Midlothian, 25 May 1995, lot 26.
