Second edition of Ascanio Condivi's Vita di Michelagnolo. This edition has been expanded to contain commentaries and annotations on Condivi’s text by Pierre Mariette, Domenico Maria Manni, and Anton Francesco Gori.


Folio (312 x 212 mm). Roman and italic type, 45 lines plus headline. Collation: π1 +4 +†4 +††4 +†††2 +††††2 A-V4: 101 leaves. Half-title, engraved device on title, engraved headpieces and initials, 4 full-page engraved plates, one full page engraved illustration. (Some small wormholes at beginning and end, occasional minor soiling or foxing).


Binding: Eighteenth-century brown calf (321 x 222 mm), red morocco label in second compartment, mottled red edges. (Ends of spine and corners repaired.)


Provenance: Eighteenth-century inscription at foot of title “Al Nobilissimo Signor Marchese Dante [?da Castiglione?]” and old shelfmark on flyleaf, "Scaff. 11. Palch. 1" — Gustavo Camillo Galletti of Florence (1805-1868), blue oval stamp to half-title and title — Extract from an Italian sale catalogue pasted to inside front cover — Pietro Toesca (1877-1962, art historian, member of Accademia dei Lincei), pictorial bookplate. Acquisition: Purchased in 2018 from Meda Riquier Rare Books, London. References: Rossetti 1994
