Description
CICERO, MARCUS TULLIUS. Orationum tomus primus. Lyon: Sébastien Gryphe, 1546
Another small format Lyon printing of Cicero in a contemporary Italian binding.
16mo (126 x 72mm). Roman and italic types, 29 lines plus headline. Collation: a-z8 A-Z8 aa–dd8 (last leaf blank): 400 leaves. Title with woodcut printer’s device. (Title page soiled and holed with loss.)
Binding: Contemporary Roman binding by Marcantonio Guillery, a frame of 2 interlaced gilt fillets, filled with scallop shells, double volute at outer angles and mid-points, in central compartment large leafy tool in corners, in centre an oval cartouche containing "M.T.C./ ORATIO/NES/ .TOM./.I.", above and below oval 2 small dolphins, spine with 3 bands fleur-de-lis in compartments, edges gilt and gauffered. (Spine restored at head and tail.)
